A built-in bookcase

bookcase One of the bedrooms functions as an office/library. There was one wall that was perfect for a built-in bookcase: Set back from the room about 16 inches, and it only had some old, hacked-together shelves in one corner. So I removed those and built a bookcase that covers the whole wall.

The case is made from oak, oak plywood for the lower cabinets, and oak planks for the shelves. Everything is stained dark walnut. The cabinets are 16''deep, and the shelves around 10''. The whole thing is roughly 8' wide and 9' high (old house=high ceilings).

bookcase The stiles for the shelves are a little bit thicker (1'') than the shelves (3/4''). One of the shelves is fixed and held into place with dadoes in the stiles. After cutting those with a jigsaw and not doing a very good job of it, I bought a router, which later on helped a lot with the doors.

bookcase The doors are made with mortises and tenons joining the stiles and rails.
