In this paper I describe the theoretical basis and implementaion of tp, a parallel parsing system for natural language utterances utilizing a unification-based PATR grammar. The system realizes two possible parallelization schemes that are supposed for the chart data structure. A bidirectional analysis is done on a multi-transputer system which is configured to form a ringlike topology. With some examples, I will show that syntax analysis is basically suitable for parallelization. Especially if one considers the high requirements that are drawn on a parser when analyzing speech, the chosen method seems to be appropriate.
